August always seems to arrive with one foot still firmly planted in summer and the other beginning to step toward fall.
The gardens are full, the evenings are still warm and there is plenty of summer left to enjoy. Yet, here at The Crafting Table Wreaths, hints of the coming season have already begun appearing on my worktable—richer colours, autumn florals, beautiful ribbons and new ideas waiting to take shape. And even some sparkly florals and greenery for the Holiday Season!
Before I move too quickly into what comes next, I wanted to pause and reflect on some of the moments that made this spring and summer especially meaningful.
Springtime in Portugal
In late spring, our family had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Portugal. We visited Porto, Lisbon, Sintra, Aveiro, Costa Nova and the seaside town of Nazaré.
Each place had its own character and beauty. From the historic streets and architecture of Porto and Lisbon to the almost storybook charm of Sintra, there seemed to be something inspiring around every corner.
Aveiro and Costa Nova brought their own special touches, including colourful buildings and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Then there was Nazaré, with its dramatic seaside setting and wonderful sense of tradition.
As someone who works with colour, texture and seasonal details, I naturally find myself noticing the little things wherever I go—the colours of a building, an interesting doorway, flowers spilling from a garden or the way a town reflects its history.
Portugal offered plenty of those moments. It was a beautiful family experience and a refreshing change of scenery that left me feeling grateful and creatively inspired.
A Quieter Summer Escape
Later in the summer, our family enjoyed a camping trip to North Bay, Ontario.
This getaway had an entirely different pace, but it was every bit as meaningful. We took in the vast expanse of Lake Nipissing, enjoyed walks along the lakeside promenade and spent time exploring the quaint town centre and visiting some of its churches.
There were also simple family moments—playing board games, talking, laughing and spending time together without the usual rush of everyday schedules.
Sometimes, those quieter experiences become the memories we treasure most. There is something wonderfully grounding about walking beside the water, taking in the scenery and simply enjoying the company of the people you love.
Inspiration Is Everywhere
This summer reminded me that inspiration does not always arrive as a grand idea. Sometimes, it is found in the colours of a Portuguese street. Sometimes, it appears in the stillness of a lake, the beauty of a church or an unhurried evening spent playing board games with family.
The same is true at my crafting table.
A wreath often begins with one small detail—a flower, a ribbon or an unexpected colour combination. From there, the design slowly comes together, one carefully chosen element at a time.
Perhaps that is why I enjoy seasonal change so much. Every new season brings a fresh palette and another opportunity to create something that helps a home feel welcoming.
Enjoying Summer While Looking Ahead
As August draws to a close, I am still enjoying the cheerful beauty of summer. My pink sunflower wreath has been a lovely reminder that even a familiar seasonal favourite can feel fresh when presented with a slightly unexpected twist.
At the same time, my thoughts are naturally turning toward fall. Warm autumn shades, textured ribbons, pumpkins, leaves and welcoming harvest designs are gradually finding their way back onto my crafting table.
There is excitement in preparing for a new season, but I do not want to rush past the one we are still enjoying.
That may be one of August’s quiet lessons: we can appreciate what is here while still looking forward to what is coming.
The Beauty of What’s Next
This spring and summer brought travel, family time, beautiful scenery and a welcome opportunity to slow down. Each experience has returned home with me in some small way, becoming part of the inspiration I carry into the next season of creating.
As I begin working more fully with fall colours and designs, I am reminded that change does not mean leaving everything behind. We bring our memories, lessons and inspiration forward with us.
