Sometimes, I wonder whether or not a highschooler should be trusted with marketing a wreath business; I mean, what does a highschooler even know about marketing? When my mom started her business, I began to help her with small things – posting pictures on her Instagram, uploading stories and reels as well, but soon that turned into taking product photos, arranging her website, marketing her wreaths on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. and the business grew! So not only did she learn and grow her business, so did I learn a thing or two.

It was so exhilarating watching orders come in and traction grow, but even more interesting (for me) was the technical aspect of it – figuring out what demonstrations of products worked, how to showcase products, designing flyers, etc.
I realised that the best way to learn how to market was to look at myself; obviously I’m a teenager who scrolls online, and I began noting how certain influencers and brands were marketing their business, and which ones would pull me in. Analysing those tactics, and applying them to The Crafting Table Wreaths proved fruitful. It didn’t matter if the age demographic was different, or if the content areas were opposites, what mattered was it was marketing! I began envisioning a theme, an aesthetic, of what The Crafting Table Wreaths would be online, how we could shape this visual appeal outside of products; to colour schemes, font choices, to convey the sophistication and effort my mom puts into her products! Needless to say, it was a fun process.

However we circle back to the main question, what even does a highschooler know about marketing? I’ve never taken a marketing or media arts course, nor have I spent much time researching, but figuring my way throughout the do’s and don’ts of social media marketing really helped me understand how the online world works and how I can use it for my mom!

This, in the end, has led to 100’s of GB on my phone of product photos, photo albums, saved audios, templates and theme palettes, SEO, keywords, and hashtag notes, and overall a drive to continually push out content. As any teenager, being a content creator is something you always want to do, the idea of channeling something teenagers spend hours on each day into a useful tool for a business is thrilling! Finally, hand in hand with my mom, I’ve been able to do so.

So to my fellow highschoolers out there, channeling your passions doesn’t need to be so generic as copy and paste influencers out there are doing, it could start from your own home. You learn so much, get to see the ups and downs of the business, and learn to read between the lines between the maker and buyer, a really unique lens to look through in a world of entrepreneurs!
